The Assessment Process

Going through a diagnostic assessment can feel pretty overwhelming and nerve-wracking, and ADHD assessments are no exception. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable and confident throughout the process.

ADHD UK offers a friendly and straightforward explanation of the assessment process, highlighting possible barriers that might come up along the way.

The QB test is a tool recommended by NICE as part of the assessment process. It’s just one piece of the whole picture. The NICE guidelines along with this video will give you all the background and information about what it is and how it works.

Right to Choose

Here are some resources about Right to Choose. This type of assessment is funded by your local NHS trust, but it's provided through a private company that's been brought in to deliver NHS services. Right to Choose waiting lists are often shorter than local NHS list, and provide the option for NHS prescription charges based on the availability of commissioned medication. However there is limitation in the range of treatments available, and if timing is crucial, this is not a reliable route.

Private Assessment

Getting an assessment through a private service like us at ADHD Plus might seem expensive, but it comes with many helpful advantages.

First, you get to choose your assessor. Not everyone who does these assessments has a deep understanding or personal experience with ADHD, neurodiversity, or mental health. If you have personal experience or a history related to these, you’ll want someone who truly understands how they interact and can give you advice suited to your specific situation.

Waiting times can be unpredictable, and if you have a specific time you need the assessment done by, paying privately can ensure it happens when you need it. Private assessments are also more flexible—they can be scheduled in the evenings or on weekends, making it easier to fit around your work, family, or other appointments.

Deciding on treatment for neurodiversity can be tough. ADHD is one of the few neuro diversity conditions where there are approved medications available. Waiting for NHS services can mean long delays or limited options for the treatment that best fits you. At ADHD Plus, we prescribe treatments based on your needs, not what the NHS can provide. If you prefer talking therapies like counselling, it’s important to find a provider and approach that work best for you, as the NHS doesn’t always offer this flexibility. Our unique approach to counselling means services are personalised, focusing on your background, problem-solving abilities, and adapting to real-life situations.

ACCESS TO WORK for ADHD

Access to Work allows people to get support in work if they have a disability or health condition, which includes ADHD. This service can offer support based on your needs, which could include adaptations and ADHD coaching. ADHD Coaching is not currently commissioned by the NHS. Funding can be obtained if you are in employment via the government Access to Work Scheme for coaching.
